Also, Siri hated his family so much, why would he become a purebreed? JKR did say that the animagus' form reflects their personality!

Whoa. I was looking up dog breeds during my lunch break for the most "Sirius-looking" breed... couldn't really find anything exactly fitting, so I came to browse through the Sirius fanlistings for ideas...

Anywhoo - I was thinking Irish Wolfhound (with a bit of Newfie scruffiness):
This is a big gigantic dog that I can imagine slipping through cage bars. And stalking through the night fortelling death.

...S'a BIG dawgie.

Irish Wolfhound: "He was used to hunt wolves and elk and to accompany Irish nobles to war." Are you thinkin' what I'm thinkin'? Wink

(Sorry, not sure how to pare down the size of that pic. Here's another, not the best angle, but if you're interested in the black version: www.greatershelbykc.or.../Con20.jpg )

I want a dog. Neutral

FINALLY!!! Someone mentioned the Irish Wolfhound!!! The description fits as well... "
Quote::
History of the Irish Wolfhound: Irish history has many references to the Wolfhound. It is said that the Celts took their hounds to Ireland around 1500 BC. Known then as the "Cu" their name used to imply bravery and many warriors would prefixed their own names with the word. Other names they have been called by are the Irish Hound and Irish Wolfdog. Currently in Ireland they are called the Cu Faoil. They were used in battle to pull men off of horseback and at times to hunt wolves. The Irish Wolfhound breed was almost lost in 1845 when a famine nearly destroyed them. It is said that a British officer by the name of Captain Graham set out to revive the breed."
from Puppydogweb

He and Remus both said that Sirius' animagus form was large enough to keep a werewolf in check. I think it kinda fits, but maybe mix the Irish Wolfhound with the Black Russian Terrier.

I think the image of the Belgian Shepard is almost perfect for Sirius, but I agree with a lot of you here, in thinking that he's probably a mix of breeds. A Siriusdog, if you like Very Happy

biowerewolf, you have a good point there! Although Sirius is pureblood, subconciously that's the last thing he wants to be. His animagus form could reflect his defiance toward the pureblood mania his parents have, perhaps?

In my head I always imagines Sirius as a Irish Wolfhoud cross. Irish Wolfhound is pretty much as big as you can get without veering into the realms of house-like proportions. But also 'very shaggy' so I guess it would have to be a hairer dog mixed in there somewhere.

Although, is it just me, but would Sirius actually BE a real breed? I mean, considering we come across precious few 'muggle' animals in the series (even 'cat' Crookshnaks is part Kneezle'). Is it not perfectly reasonable that he could be something JKR just whipped up in her incredible imagination? (although I DO like biowerewolf's reasoning....)

Sirius swam from Azkaban, right? Well, because of that and the other descriptions, I still see him as Newfie. (They have webbed feet.)

Labradors also have webbed feet.

My first post, yay!

I have always imagined Padfoot as a black wolfhound. He's not fat and hairy like a Newfy, and shaggier than a lab, and of course HUGE, though not exactly bear-sized. So I was Googling pictures of black wolfhounds to post, and I found- honestly, I don't know how, I only typed in 'wolfhound black'- I found a picture of Sirius. It's insane. Doesn't this look just like him? Post-Marauder, I think, but only just. This is how I imagined him in Harry's photo of his parents' wedding. The thumbnail looks better, I think.

*SPOILER WARNING*
If you haven't seen OoTP yet and don't want it spoiled for you in any way, skip this post. If you HAVE seen it, just highlight the text to read it.

I was SO happy when I saw OoTP opening night and they showed Padfoot sauntering into the room at King's Cross Station. To my wonderful surprise they used an Irish Wolfhound!!! Yay!!! It was just as I had pictured him when reading the books (see previous posts in this thread). It made sense to me to show him as sleeker looking and more well kept since he'd not been hiding out in caves and such this go round. I'm so glad that they used a real dog instead of CGI this time. What do you guys think?

Frankly, I always imagined Sirius' animagus form as sort of a black lab crossed with a newfoundlander dog, but that's just my opinion.

Totally agreeing here thelo, I HATED that CGI dog, it just looked way to fake. The real dog gives you that anamagi feel, plus it looks better on screen. I would have prefered a mutt-dog to the specific breed they used, though.

Please avoid posting one line responses in posts. I would suggest lengthening your posts, perhaps being more specific on why you liked this version of dog.

Thank you

Well I must say that the irish Wolfhound would certainly fit the bill for the big size, but also the labrador would too.

What I 'm thinking is a possible cross between the two, the wolfhound for size and the lab for strength and stubbrounness. My grandmother has a yellow lab and my god he is huge. Also doesn't like to listen, but is the sweetest thing on earth.

The only thing that makes me think maybe a tad bit of Chow Chow possibly is the coat looking matted. Of course we all know it's because of him living in caves. but I have a picture of a dog whom if not a little small and a white streak on him looked almost excactly like Padfoot to me.

s32.photobucket.com/al...edited.jpg

His name was Joey.. saw him at the pound and as I had said, other than the size and the white streak on his chest.. That's almost to the letter how I saw Sirius in his Animagus form. Sadly I couldn't get him.. believe me I wanted to LOL.

And hero I agree, the cGI dog just looked to fake. As to why I liked the real dog for the movie, it adds a touch of realism into it that maybe you could actually SEE a big black shaggy dog walking in the middle of King's Cross station. Don't tell me that you don't do a double take everytime you see one. I know I do XD

(photobucket was being stupid. I hope this works)

Sirius is always just a big, shaggy mutt in my head! He seems so cute, that way!
