So, now that I have your attention, I'm here to announce a new digging thread for all international Harry Potter readers. The results are being collected and placed in the HP Translations Thesaurus here at Immeritus. Thanks to my ickle daughter, Catzeyes, for proposing this topic to the powers that be. Woot!

We're compiling a list of HP character names, places, things, etc *as they appear in the translations* as a reference to international readers. This is an ongoing project and all languages are welcome.

Below are lists of characters, terms, plants, spells, things, etc. in the Harry's world. Now, before I get complaints about the way I've sorted major and minor characters, I've categorized them according to importance to Harry (you may question some, but please bear with me; there are a lot of characters here).

Please post in this thread with corresponding terms *as they appear in your translations*. I'll edit the lists here as entries come in.

Attention: Here is the compiled thesaurus so far.

Immeritans, commence digging!

You do quick work! Now, as I recall the quote, Mag will "love you forever". :luv

Wish I could help, but I don't have any other books but the American ones.

I'd like to ask, though, as people respond, would you be so kind as to post a photo of the cover of your International books? I have seen some really neat covers on google searches, but none really high enough resolution to appreciate them. Thanks!

Hey Penny, great work! I know I couldn't have done better even if it was my project! :DD

Thanks for taking it in hand, you are a great mother!

Anyway, I'll be back with the French names as soon as I can, and I'll also try and find all the covers!

Also, in looking at Muggle.net I taugh maybe you could also put the Marauders' names (Moony, Padfoot, ...) you know what I mean, and maybe also Snuffles. What do you think? Do't want you to have too much work, it's just to complete the list!

EDIT: 8 more sleeps til I will be in the land of Harry Potter en die Towenaar se Steen *mental note to purchase Afrikaans dictionary, so I can figure all this stuff out* but in the meantime here's a link to an atricle about the Afrikaans Harry Potter translations, with a couple of the names that have been changed.

...the feeling returned to him. The hand, the impression of somebody watching over him...

He wasn’t alone anymore. He was never alone. Sirius was there, watching. He knew that now. He smiled.

Post Post subject: Latin Names! For a laugh.
Posted: Sat Oct 30, 2004 12:08 PM
Reply with quote

I know I've told some of you, Harry Potter is available in Latin, and I have it! So far only PS has been translated, but I'll post more if they come out. Meanwhile I shall get all the ones I can from PS. (I only showed the ones that are different... though of course the names change with what case they're in... I cracked up the first time I saw 'Dursleyorum' [lit: of the Dursleys]

Harry Potter = Harrius Potter

Ronald Weasley = Ronaldus Vislius [lit: Weasel-like, we think]

Ginny = Ginny Vislia (just made to agree gender-wise, but I thought I'd include it)

Fred = Fredericus

George = Georgius

Neville = Neville Longifundus [yup, long bottom]

[Arthur is not in PS, and Molly's first name is never used; Crabbe and Goyle's first names also never used]

Sirius Black = Sirius Niger

Lupin not mentioned, James and Lily are the same, no Pettigrew. Scabbers the same though. Voldemort same, no mention of Riddle, also no Moody or Aberforth

All the rest the same, or not mentioned in PS.

Minor ones:

Uncle Vernon Dursley = Avunculus Vernon Dursley

Aunt Petunia = Matertera Petunia

Oliver Wood = Oliver Silvius

Yay! A quest! *fetches shovel*

Quote::
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone: Harry Potter und der Stein der Wiesen

It's "Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen", not 'Wiesen' in German. "Harry Potter und der Stein der Wiesen"sounds funny though, it means something like 'Harry Potter and the stone of meadows'.

I'll do the German translations, I'm going to print the list and look up the names now.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to also include the names of potions and spells? Most of the names are not translated, or changed only a little, but the potions, spells and creatures are often called completely different in other languages.

Good job, Pen! (PEN! PEN! ALWAYS THE PEN!) However, I think you should use a smaller font on the website, that way you can see more columns at the same time. Also, I'd like to see a symbol for the occasions where the name is not translated, just kept as-is. And a last thing, if you don't center the headlines, so that the lists will line up right under them, it will be easier to distinguish the languages.

Edit: Of course, I can tell this is not the final layout or anything. But I'm anxious to play around with it and I'm somewhat interested in layout matters =)

Hey Padfoot, thanks! I just picked the names in a thread, obviously had a mistake.

I think including potions and spells in a good idea but maybe not yet? I mean, lets finish the characters first. I think it would be too much work for Penny to put everything in the list.

Then, when everything s finished, maybe we can start the rest.

But I think it's a great idea!
