I thought I'd create a topic where everyone could share thier favorite kids books. My mom is an elementary school teacher, so I've read some good ones both recently, and as a child. There are some real works of art out there.

Here are some of my favorites:

~The Velveteen Rabbit

~The BFG (or anything Roald Dahl, but this one was always my favorite)

~The Giver. I read this one only recently. It's like 1984 for kids..

~The Church Mice series. I've mentioned this one before, I think. The stories are very cute and very British, and the illustrations are amazing.

~Ella Enchanted

~A Wrinkle in Time

~Watership Down (Now, I'm not really sure if this is technically considered a children's book, but I read it as a child, so...)

I could go on and on, but I'll refrain...for now. Buahaha!

ooo- I loved the giver. Really good. The only other kids books I can think of were this series of books called "the zodiac chillers". They were all mysteries, and had something to do with a certain sign. My favorite was this one called the scorpio society. They weren't classics or anything, but I thought they were good when I was little. I don't believe they make the anymore <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :pupeyes --><img src=http://pages.prodigy.net/siriusblack/boards/smilies/puppy_dog_eyes.gif ALT=":pupeyes]<!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> . Although, now that I look at at amazon.com, they did make more than I have read... hmmm...the zodiac chiller books

Edit: hmm.. I don't know why all the zodiac chillers are not on one page, but I will link the scorpio society hereI also liked <!--EZCODE UNDERLINE START--><span style="text-decoration:underline]The Saddle Club<!--EZCODE UNDERLINE END--> books, and <!--EZCODE UNDERLINE START--><span style="text-decoration:underline]The Baysitters Club<!--EZCODE UNDERLINE END--> books.

Although, I don't read any of these any more...~Ms. E

I LOVED Enid Blyton school stories - Malory Towers and St Clare's. I've also been reading the 'Ally's World' series and the 'Confessions of Georgia Nicolson' series - possibly Young Adult rather than children's, but both very good. I'm about to start the first Lemony Snicket, if I can find the time... I really enjoy Jacqueline Wilson, and Anne Fine - goggle-eyes is one I remember in particular.

There must have been THOUSANDS of others -I was an avid reader as a child - but my mind's gone blank. <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START Embarassed --><img src=http://pages.prodigy.net/siriusblack/boards/smilies/blush.gif ALT=":blush]<!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

As a big kid, I love the Artemis Fowl series. Those three books are grand.

When I was a kid, back in the day, I loved the 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books. Man, I think I checked every single one out of the library. Those were cool.

Hm, that's a tough one. I have to say I enjoyed quite a few:

Goosebumps: I loved the goosebump series, they were my first chapter books. I had to have everyone of them because I just thought they were so much fun! I also enjoyed some other stories by R.L. Stein(?) but my favorite has to be about Mist the cat. I don't remember the EXACT story anymore, but it's pretty much like this. One day a cat jumped into a girl's window and it wanted to take over her life, so she began to act like a cat and the cat began to act like a human. It was a neat little story.

Animorphs: Those were a lot of fun too! Not much more to say about these, I didn't read too many of them.

Ping the duck: An oriental story about a duck named Ping. Some person owned a flock of ducks and he would call them back to the ship, and the last duck to get back onto the ship would get a whapping. One day Ping was going to be late and get whapped and he was frightened, so he chose to run away. He goes through a bunch of things, including people trying to eat him, but eventually he gets back to his ship and his family. Unfortunately he ends up getting smacked anyway after all that trouble.

THE CHRONICHLES OF NARNIA!!! Those were the best books! The ending was so sad. And Susan! Oh, I read them for the first time last summer (2002) even though I've owned them since I was like 7! I used to love the Animal Ark series too. A Series of Unfortunate Eventsis soo funny. Lemony Snicket is as weird as I am.

If I am not mistaken, Hallmark did a made for TV movie on those books. I saw it at blockbuster. Another great, and long movie, but it was a made for TV thing, is the 10th Kingdom. just do a quick Google search, because I can't express how great the book and the show is.

My fav books were Fear Street - RL Stine

Babysitters Club

and Sweet Vally HighBut RL Stine was my all time.

Oh, I suppose I should tell you my choices back when I was a little boy and what I read. Yes, Aoife. As I have already agreed with you once on this, Watership Down is a great book. I just got the DVD of the animated movie of it and it brought back old memories for me. For example, renewing the check-out of the book in my grade school library for weeks on that book until I finished it. Chronicles of Narnia. How could you not put that on a good children's book list? Wonderful. And that is why I have always thought of my Patronus as being a lion. Aslan was a great, great character.

Let see, what else . . oh dear, Aoife. You got me again. The Velveteen Rabbit was one of my favorite books when I was little. It still brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it. You have hit a very soft spot in me, dear Aoife. Thank you. My favorite character in the book was the Skin Horse. He poses and ponders the one big question of the book that the Rabbit really wanted to know. Very, very good book. And, if anybody wants to make fun of either the book itself or of me for saying is going to get some serious words out of me for provoking me. At any rate . .

Mag, I loved the Choose Your Own Adventure books! I had, at one point, 10 or 15 of them. I wanted to get them all, but either couldn't or just didn't like whatever Adventure was in the book. But . . that was mighty good fun . . . if you want to go with Beth back to the shore to see if you can find any more shells, turn to page 45. If you want to go with Stever into the shack to investigate the note scrawled on the door, turn to page 63. To sit and wait until Ann comes back, continue to the next page. . . . Those were great memories. Which brings another series to mind. Did you ever read the Time Machine books with the silver covers, Mag? It was just like Choose Your Own Adventure, but you went back in time as a character. I can remember one on Atlantis, one in the French Revolution, and one in the Russian Revolution. I remember I had several other books in the series, but I can't remember at what point in time they were set in. However, those were wonderful books as well.

I shall add one more to the list, although, per se, it is not so much a book as it is a collection of stories. I had these stories read to me by either my mother or father practically every night to help me fall asleep and dream. I still have that big book and can loosely remember some of the stories. Quickly enough, I learned how to read a lot of the stories to myself alone. Oh, and the book/collection? Grimms' Fairy Tales.

So many wonderful happy memories. . .great idea for a thread. Thank you so much, Aoife!

Trish, the Chronicles of Narnia are amazing! I still read them from time to time. Let's see, I read the Babysitter's Club too, but it's not something I'm proud of. I could have spent my time reading more worthwhile books that I ended up reading in high school instead because I never knew they were good. I guess that is what I get for having non-literary friends untill sophomore year.

But I delved deeply into Arthurian legends. I loved T.H. White's The Sword in the Stone, extended version of book one of The Once and Future King. I am Mordred by, um, I forget, was also good. Le Morte D'Arthur tops it all, though.

To Kill a Mockingbird was also a favorite of mine. I still am in love with Scout, she's so cool. My first novel, Heidi, will always have a special place in my heart, as will the second, the Secret Garden.

Oh! How could I forget the two authors with whom I was secretly obbsessed with from fifth to eighth grade!! Louisa May Alcott and L. M. Montgomery!! Anne of the Green Gables Series is the best! And I think that my favorite Alcott book was Little Men, or possibly Eight Cousins. I had a thing for the nineteenth century, apparently.

Memories, memories. Now, where is that copy of Little Women...

There were so many great books that I read and still read. *cough*harrypotter*cough*

The Chronicles of Narnia were awesome books, and I used to love Goosebumps, but I don't anymore. I like Artemis Fowl too, and the Protector of the Small series. And I absolutely love His Dark Materials, the last one was so sad. I could go on and on about all of the books that I loved but it would take me forever, considering I nearly checked out the whole fiction section of the library.

Adios my friends!

It seems the only way out of your grief is that fate in store for us all, sooner or later. But then you think of everyone else, and you realize you can't, for their sake. You think of everyone else who shares your sadness, and remember that they all knew him, even if not so much as you. You feel the hot tears fall again and think,He's not gone. He will come back. I will see him again. You fall against your window sill and look out into the night, only to see the stars twinkling sadly at you. Not caring who hears, you whisper into the night and hope that he hears you, "I love you and I will see you again. I promise." As you take the vow, you stumble back to your bed and cry yourself asleep, thinking, I promise. I promise...

I read tons of children's books... I guess I actually read more of them than I read 'grown-up' books, because I love the lightheartedness and easy suspension of disbelief you often find in them.

My favourite book when I was a child was a book called "The Letter for the King" by a Dutch writer (Tonke Dragt). I know it's been translated into German, but I don't know about English... If any of you are ever able to read it, I strongly recommend that you do. It's a wonderful book.

I also really liked Elyne Mitchell's 'Silver Brumby' series. I was absolutely in love with one of the horses in that series, Baringa from Silver Brumbies of the South.

I recently read His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, and that series, is really, really, REALLY great. The first book, Northern Lights (aka The Golden Compass) is a nice book. The second book, The Subtle Knife, is not quite so good, but the third book, The Amber Spyglass is absolutely stunning. References to Milton and Dante abound. You get angels, different worlds, Eve revisited, and many other great things. Go read!

Also very good are the Arthur books by Kevin Crossley-Holland. I hope to write somewhat about them in my doctoral thesis, because it's such a nice re-telling of the Arthurian Legend. The first book is called The Seeing Stone, and the second one is At the Crossing Places. They deal with Arthur, a young boy in the 12th century, who is given a magical stone by his friend Merlin. In this stone he can see into the sixth century and follow the adventures of his namesake, the famous King Arthur. Crossley-Holland re-creates the stories about King Arthur in a nice, accurate way, and the comparisons he makes between both Arthurs are really good. Highly recommended!

There is a me you would not recognize, dear.

Call it the shadow of myself.

And if the music starts before I get there dance without me.

You dance so gracefully...

There are some common misconceptions about the Artemis Fowl and His Dark Materials Series(The Golden Compass). People say that they are Harry Potter rip offs which couldn't be further from the truth (although I haven't gotten around to reading Artemis Fowl, and I sort of know how it ends - who dies). They are totally different and are almost/just as good.
