Peter Pettigrew is probably a lot like Regulus Black. Both got deeply involved with something that they shouldn't have. The only difference is that while Regulus tried to back out, Peter didn't (which, curiously enough, shows the Gryffindor in him) and probably won't. But I do not think that Peter deserves any slack; the ninth level of hell is reserved for traitors, and he betrayed his friend to the Dark Side. His deception and lies have gone on too long for me to believe for a second that he is under the Imperius Curse, or ever was. You don't become a Death Eater by being controlled. Peter probably killed someone or used one of the Unforgivable Curses in order to worm his way into Voldemort inner circle.
Additionally, I bet that what Dumbledore was referring to was a spell of the deepest magic, one that Peter cannot break no matter how hard he tries. Perhaps some sort of shield charm where Peter cannot cause any harm to Harry, no matter how hard he tries.

The shield charm is a good theory, but who should have casted it? And when?
As for Peter, have a little mercy on him people. I've seen some pretty nasty replies to this topic. Sure he's a traitor who doesn't deserve to live, but as Robert said, if someone tortured and killed him slowly, who would be the worst person? If we should kill him it should be fast. We're civilized persons, aren't we?
While I'm at it: the prisons in "the muggle world" contains tons of cold-blooded murderers and traitors, but do we have a burning desire to kill and torture every single one of them? Think about it.

I agree with you Trish! I guess there's something important or a reason why Peter is still alive... Maybe he'll do something that will help Harry... We don't know what might happen right?<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :shrug --><img src=http://pages.prodigy.net/siriusblack/boards/smilies/shrug.gif ALT=":shrug]<!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

Yeah he could in time see the light, i can only dream who will die next but we know more people will die cause it is war and people die in war, i never would have guessed that Padfoot would have been the one to go infact i was most ceartin that it wasnt going to be him, when she annouced that somoene would die in book 5.
Back to Peter he must have some purpose and as DD said he is in dept to Harry now, maybe he will end up coming back on the good side, but who knows we have to assume the hat put him in Gryiffndor for some reason and not Slytheiren

Though I must say I don't care for Peter, and I DO think he committed the murders Black was sentenced to, I don't believe he gets off of inflicting pain on people. I think a person who inflicts pain is sadistic, and to me, Peter isn't sadistic, just a coward trying to save his own skin: save face to the rest of the wizarding world by setting up Sirius Black, while accomplishing what Voldermort intructed him to do.
There must have been some kind of heavy duty pressure on him to have joined Voldermort, and again, I am not using this on his defense, but I don't think he acted on his DESIRE to be on Voldermort's side.
His downfall was being very good friends with the Mauraders and a coward. This made him a perfect victim for Voldermort.
Still, I don't know what I would have done in his shoes...but certainly not killed people though.

It's been a while since I've been to this topic, hasn't it? I would just like to state that I find it interesting that Peter is getting the most discussion on this topic...and his name isn't even in the subject! Just goes to show how interesting he is, I suppose. People who exclude him are really missing out.
It's nice to see that everyone isn't blood thirsty and screaming for Peter to be tortured or to get the dementors kiss. I agree with AA about Peter not getting off on inflicting pain to people. It just doesn't seem like the kind of thing he would enjoy.

I am too curious to see how people deal with Sirius' death; especially how Snape takes it.
He is one of my favorite characters and because the animosity was so tense with Sirius, it will be interesting.
I have often wondered Snape's relationship with Peter???? What of these two will be revealed?
