Twilight

Stephenie Meyer has a series out and the first book is called simply twilight. I'm thrilled to have permission to start a thread discussing her books.

I had seen the book listed on shelfari but with the cover thought it would be some garden of eden thing and didn't bother to look at it. Fred from Fred lives told me he was going to start writing some "book rock" about it, but I still had not read it. Then I saw Mag with her brand new shiny poster and finally decided I should look into this Cedric looking book. Oh the power of the Mag-Goddess bless her.
So off to the store I went and saw the apple book, hmm, maybe I should just buy it in paperback.
I went back the next day and bought it in hard cover as well as every other book Stephenie Meyer has written. Ok the rest of the series and another called the host.

My favorite lines

"Needles" I explained.
"Afraid of a needle," he muttered to himselfunder his breath, shaking his head. "Oh, a sadistic vampire, intent on tourturing her to death, sure, no problem, she runs off to meet him, An IV on the other hand...

that and the explanation of how she was injured.

Anyway there are a lot of people here who can describe the style of the books better then me so please what did you think of twilight?

I love the series, and have read all of her books. She's currently writing a sequel to The Host right now. She says that Breaking Dawn is the last of the twilight series but I think that there is at least one more book she could write.
The main idea of the story, girl meets vampire and his family, vampire and girl falls in love, there's a little problem with her being mortal so vampire leaves, best friend consoles girl and falls in love with her, oh surprise best friend is a werewolf!, vampire gets in to trouble, girl rides to rescue, girl and vampire back to gether, werewolf makes three, nice little triangle, who to choose?, more trouble. (Girl cannot keep out of trouble) and then thrilling conclusion.
It's exciting and thrilling and the first book is being made in a movie out this December. I highly recommend this series.

I kept hearing people discuss the books and so went and looked at the write up in Amazon. That put me off. Teenage vampires are just not my thing. But people kept discussing them and going on about the series, so I decided to read the first. I read all three and own The Host (but haven't read it yet) as well. I'm waiting for Breaking Dawn to come out in audio form (download for Ipods in case anyone knows where I can get it) because I know that once I start reading it, I won't want to stop and I don't have that much time right now.

The point being that they are really, really good books. I could have done without all the teenage Gothic romance stuff personally, but the stories are extremely good and very haunting. It took me days to stop thinking about them after I'd finished the third. I can't tell you exactly what it is, but they have that certain something that hooks you and reels you in. I suppose it might be that the main character Bella is such a personable character. She's easy to identify with. Plus, there are a lot of very interesting moral conflicts within the story that keep you locked in. It's almost as if you are waiting for Bella to make her decisions before you can decide what's right and wrong. The dilemma she's in is very interesting and the idea occupies you with the wheretos and whyfores, what's really right or wrong and is there any way out of the situation that won't land her in a situation that calls for her to make such a dramatic decision which will not only affect her life, but possibly her afterlife as well. It's all very interesting.

Does anyone know if the Pope has condemned these books yet? I would think he would have, unless they learned from the HP series that doing so only called more attention to them...

Although you would think he would approve of the whole "abstaining before marriage" thing, wouldn't he?

Anyway, hooray for a Twilight thread on Immy! I have been completely obsessed with these books since reading them earlier in the year. I agree with Canute - there is just something about them that reels you in, and within the first few chapters, you're hooked. Permanently. Ive found myself wanting to read anything and everything about these books, and if you find yourself in a similar situation, I suggest you head over to www.stepheniemeyer.com to read the outtakes from the books, the first chapter of Midnight Sun (Edward's version of Twlight that SMeyer is currently working on) and a whole bunch of other stuff. It really is an emotional rollercoaster, the Twilight saga. I found myself completely infatuated with not just one, but two, fictional characters. I refer of course to Edward and Jacob, quite possibly two of my favourite fictional men aside from Sirius Black and Mr Darcy. Edward is old fashioned, kind, thoughtful, and a bit overprotective, while Jacob is warm, funny, sweet and a little reckless. Its hard to choose between them really.

I agree with you Canute, her situation is incredibly interesting, if somewhat disturbing and yet heartbreaking at the same time. I can promise you that Breaking Dawn does have a happy ending, although at times I was a little disappointed with some of the plot. Its still very enjoyable. I can't wait for Midnight Sun though - angsty Edward out in force. Apparently it's only half way done and yet it's twice as long as Twlight is, because Edward thinks so much more thoroughly then Bella does.

I must say I had never of Twilight before Immeritans started talking about it. I, like Canute, looked it up on Amazon and the books do look very good indeed. I haven't bought them yet because my purse is kind of broken at the moment but I definitly will. If anyone has any idead too get them very cheap I'm listening hard!

Remember the Wiki write-up Canute? I think that was even worse than the Amazon reviews! *laughs*

I read the books a couple of months ago after hearing about them from Tara and Mag via avatars and merchandise. Very Happy For me the books are all about Mr Edward Cullen who is one of my favourite fictional characters and has made me eager to read Midnight Sun. If the rest of that book is in the same vein as the first chapter then I'll be very happy indeed.

As for the four already released books, my favourite remains Twilight because of the humour, closely followed by Eclipse because of the Guh and Breaking Dawn for the happy ending. I didn't enjoy New Moon as much first time around because of the comparative lack of Edward but the more I read it the more I like it.

I wonder what you guys think of Bella? I've read a lot of criticism of her character - mostly people saying she's too perfect, has all the boys chasing after her, etc etc. Do you think she's a Mary-Sue? For me, Bella's lack of self-esteem and constant clumsiness makes her grounded in reality and therefore not a Mary-Sue. I agree with with Canute in that I found it easy to identify with her most of the time. And even if she does have a unrealistic line of suitors, I can forgive all as it leads to one of my all-time favourite Twilight moments when Edward holds up everyone in the car park just to give Tyler his chance. Very Happy

I start the thread and then am afraid to read to much until I finish all the books, I finished new moon a few days ago but work I simply haven't been able to start the third book. The second book made me anxious, like I lost something and kept waiting and waiting to find it. I enjoyed it, I freaked out in October, November and December. OMG, I also thought the Bella's ay of dealing with everything was believable. I did say spoilers but don't want to be just a spoil post. I do think Bella has more of a relationship with Edward's parents then she has ever had with hers. I also like the style of writing. Its not all she said happily, sadly, loudly. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.

Sorry for the double post, I just finished the last book, I loved the first book, was a bit anxious during the second book, but still enjoyed it. But the last book, well I have to say was not my favorite at all. I had alot of issues with it, yes I am glad at how it ended, but so much of the book didn't feel right to me, I have to say I'm glad I didn't read some of the posts before I finished it. Some of the things I liked where the way the first person story read and how that first person changed for a time and yet it felt logical to change the view point. I liked how the relationship between Edward's family developed, I didn't really think Bella's relationship with her mother was very good, she lived with her for how long but she really was not important at all. I didn't like how one of the characters became like this superhero, it was like oh come on I can buy the vampire thing but....

Well she's in the middle of a rewrite of twillight from Edward's point of view. And I agree that there is definately an unfinished quality to the last book. Maybe she could arc onto a new group of books from that. Maybe a book of Jacob, werewolves are hot too.

To all my fellow Twilight fans out there who were anxiously awaiting the release of Midnight Sun - we are in for big disappointment. I don't know if everyone has heard this, but the first 12 chapters of the book were leaked recently, and Stephenie has posted a comment on her website detailing this leak.

You can read the leaked chapters and her comments here:
www.stepheniemeyer.com...htsun.html

So, basically, she was so upset by the leak that she is no longer working on it, and it's on hold indefinitely. The fans are punished for one person's selfishness. Honestly, I'm disappointed by this. I mean, I can completely understanding her being upset by having her work shown over the net before it's finished and without her permission, but this seems over the top. It also seems a bit of an immature reaction to me. Everyone was well aware that the leaked chapters were drafts and as such were flawed. There are also heaps of people who would not have read them simply because they wished to wait until the finished product was on the shelves - I was one of those people. And even if I had read them, it wouldn't have stopped me from buying it when it finalyl came out. I was looking forward to Midnight Sun so much more then I had been looking forward to Breaking Dawn, because it would have been 100% classic Edward.

She has posted the pages on her web site, so that anyone who still wants to read them can, I had no idea it was twelve chapters worth, but I can understand it unnerving her enough to stop writing for now. I started reading them late last night and stopped after around 18 pages thinking, well there cant be much more leaked! But twelve chapters is insane, how cruel was one of her supposed friends to do this to her. I will say when I heard she was writing another book in Edward's view my first thought was "What is the point of that, we will see his views when the movie comes out, but first three pages I was hooked. OMG poor Edward, and well done. I find what I have read so far totally believable. As far as it being on hold, well we know how the story ends, so if she takes a hiatais from writing the rest, I look forward to it, and will buy it when it comes out.

But she said indefinitely. I think this means she wont be releasing the book at all, hence my reaction. The movie also won't really show Edward's point of view, it won't show the thoughts he picks up from other students, or his time in Alaska upon first meeting Bella, or his reactions to the growing feelings he has for her. There is so much this book would have given Twilight fans, and I'm really disappointed that it won't be coming out.

I suppose my reaction is all due to disappointment, and I do feel bad for Stephenie Meyer. She did cop a lot of criticism from Breakign Dawn, which honestly wasn't that bad. It was enjoyable. The hype did build it up to be something massive and I suppose nothing she could have written would have satisfied everyone. But to put off writing a book indefinitely, it is disappointing.

In an interview with Stephenie Meyer not too long ago she said that she was going to wait another couple of years for the Midnight Sun craze to die down and then she would start writing again. Still, its disappointing. I read the chapters she posted on her website and they were awesome. I enjoy Edward's point of view so much more than Bella's.

I started reading Twilight about three weeks ago when I got the series from the library. I was totally hooked by the first few chapters. I just bought the hardback versions of Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse last weekend so I can re-read them at my pleasure Smile . Twilight is definitely my favorite, followed by New Moon, then Eclipse, and lastly Breaking Dawn. The humor, uncertainty, and the developing relationship between Bella and Edward are some of the things I really enjoyed in Twilight. I know New Moon is low on mostly everyone's list because of the lack of Edward, but I liked it because of the strong emotions it evoked out of me. It takes a really good book to make me sob like a little baby, even after reading it for a second time. I was on an emotional roller coaster reading that book, and that is a big plus for me. Eclipse was pretty good. Its sort of hard for me to elaborate on it, 'cause I don't have much praise or criticism for it. I liked it more than BD though! heheh. Yep, Breaking Dawn. It was pretty interesting. I really loved the intensity of Bella and Edward's relationship.

I read the first three books last fall when a friend gave them to me to read. She said I would love them and I did. Twilight is definitely my favorite. I reread that one right away after finishing them all. I actually went and bought Twilight so I could reread it. I was completely obsessed. Still am I guess.

We have tickets for the movie on Friday.
