I'm still new around here, so I apologize if this has already been discussed previously. I was wondering if there has been any discussion about Crookshanks' rather strange behavior in PoA. It still bothers me that the cat knew right from the first instant, in the magical animal shop, that Scabbers not only was human, but that he was a rotten human, and Sirius was good. Good old Crooky was willing to die to protect our hero.

And I thought...if there could be three hidden animagi running around, why not a fourth that hasn't yet been revealed? Any thoughts? Anyone?

I read somewhere that he is part magical animal- I don't remember what it is called, but it is this large cat-typre thing that has unusually high intelligence, and it was in the "magical beasts..." book (you know, the other "school book" that JK rowling wrote with the "quidditch through the ages book") anyways, it is the only book of hers that I don't own, so I didn't read about it. anyways, I read that crookshanks is half cat, half this magical animal- I don't remember if it was a rumor, or something JK said- so don't quote me on this- does anyone else know about it and can say something more concrete?

Crookshanks is half-cat, half-Kneezle, a cat-like creature of great intelligence. The Kneazle can detect unsavory or suspicious persons very well and will react badly to them. However, if it takes a liking to a Witch or Wizard, it makes an excellent pet (from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). The Kneazle has spotted fur, large ears, and a lion-like tail.

I don't think Crookshanks is an Animagus, seeing as every clue can be answered by the simple fact that he isn't even a complete cat. Not to mention that I think the plot-turn would be horribly over-used by now, and nothing like the surprise spurred from Pettigrew's transformation.

Thanks for clarifying for me. I think I'm gonna have to spring for those schoolbooks one of these days...

Yes, they're very useful. I don't have them myself, which is odd, considering Mag and me's room is an HP haven, but I've read them nonetheless. Has tons of stuff the books don't.

Happy to help.

Where does it say that crookshanks is half kneazle? I'm about halfway through PoA for the second time, and I vaguely remember hearing something about that, but I haven't heard it yet.

That explains a lot...

I have actually come across someone who was convinced that Crookshanks was really a member of the Order in Animagus form, I think they had said they though it was Mundungus. Odd theory O_O but I think I remember them being in a scene together.

I have two things to say:

Firstly, if you have ever read Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging Angus may remind you of Crookshanks. I picture them one and the same actually.

Secondly, I firmly believe that the animagus thing has been overdone and Crookshanks, if anything is a kneazle. So, being the animal that he is, I had a thought. Has Crookshanks ever met Mrs. Norris? Just a thought. It would be terrible though for Filch to have his own little part-kneazle-cat-army-thing out to patrol the school. But if there's such a thing as Padfoot Puppy Love, why not Crookshanks Kitty Love?

(plus it might get Mrs. Norris to back off the students)

All I can say is, I wish J.K would kill off Crookshanks. Now that he has done his bit for the story in PoA, there's no point in him being around. He really annoys me (if you can't tell).

Cat hater! Why don't you like him? Cats are like people, they can get cranky, but other than that he's cute and fluffly and just like my kitty. Its not like he's done much to take away from the plot, he's just a background character like Pansy Parkinson or Ernie MacMillan. He's just there. His bit may not be over yet either.<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START Crookshanks --><img src=http://pages.prodigy.net/siriusblack/boards/smilies/cat.gif ALT=":cat]<!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

Cat haters can like Crookshanks as he is only half cat. He is also part kneazle and is much more likeable than my cat, even though she's so cute. We also own a beware of cat sign and you can look but dont touch. Crookshanks likes you if your intentions are good. My cat likes you just to site the other people she wont let touch her (myself included).

Watch out, I'm getting all defensive over here...<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :grr --><img src=http://pages.prodigy.net/siriusblack/boards/smilies/grr.gif ALT=":grr]<!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

Cats are great. The stereotype of housecats are aloof, hostile things that scratch. Granted, some are, but my cat comes out to greet me almost every day when I get home and is friendly and affectionate. He'll even hop on our backs and give us a massage if we lie on our stomach, and gets lonely and meows for us if we don't play with him for too long. Most cats I know are wonderful animals.

Now, even if you don't like cats, which I can accept, that's no reason to want JK to kill Crookshanks! Even Ron liked Crookshanks after he found out the truth about why he kept trying to get at Scabbers. Crookshanks was the first creature to accept Sirius after he left Azkaban. Crookshanks tried repeatedly to capture Wormtail for him. Crookshanks was even willing to die for Sirius; remember when he jumped onto his chest when Harry was pointing his wand at Sirius? What would Sirius think if he heard you saying that about his pal, the "most intelligent of his kind I've ever met"?

Sorry...<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :rolleyes --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes]<!--EZCODE EMOTICON END--> ...I bear no you no malice, SBF, but I can't take a comment like that lying down. There are just some things you've gotta defend...

I do have 2 other cats. One is a giant beanie babie and the other is a fraidy cat who loves to cuddle, although he has hippogriff talons and is the shape of a basketball. Well, really, those two are my brothers' but mine is the evil one. But Crookshanks is definitely more than a cat.<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START Crookshanks --><img src=http://pages.prodigy.net/siriusblack/boards/smilies/cat.gif ALT=":cat]<!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

We know that crookshanks is half cat-half kneazle because JK says it on her website. It explains a hell of a lot. I think she may be leaving Crookshanks heritage for the next book, and i don't think she wouldn't have added him in unless it has some relavence to the plot (stopped Harry from thinked he was crazy when he thought he saw the grim didn't he? showed sirius had some compassion, didn't he? brought it forward that scabbers was nothing but the treacherous Pettigrew, didn't he?), so maybe you should read the book properly before saying that crookshanks is a useless misdemenour in the plot. I love crookshanks. He'll probs come in more useful later on (perhaps the rest get lost in the woods?). Kneazles "can be relied upon to guide there owners safely home if they are lost."

"People who don't like cats were probably mice in their past lives" - so says my fridge magnet, and everybody knows how impecably accurate fridge magnets can be...

p.s- am not usually this grouchy, it just gets to me that others are critising one of my fav "characters," not to mention one that has the same personality as my own wee darlin'
