Post Post subject: Why do so many Metallica songs fit HP characters?

I can't even begin to imagine the turmoil inside of Harry at this point. True, it's been building to this point since his first showdown with Voldemort in SS, but every year the wire of tension stretches just a bit more. PoA was the book that led me to start thinking about the event at which the proverbial camels back will be broken.

In CoS Harry realizes someone is trying to kill him (different this time because he doesn't know *who*). He lives with this heavy burden and performs well in the Triwizard Tournament, but the murder of Cedric is truly an event that jars Harry's inner world. He has seen a peer murdered unexpectedly. His inner turmoil and imaginary audience become agitated during his summer of isolation. He is then forced to endure the events of OotP. He learns the prophecy and its possible meaning and has to add that to the draining mix.

I think of this turmoil adding and the pressure building as we head toward the climax of the series. I think of Harry trying to deal with all of this added to the normal teenage stuff like realtionships, dating, etc. I think about his self esteem and what he feels for himself.

As I do that, this song seems to seem appropriate. It's definitely the song of someone struggling with inner turmoil.

There's a song I keep hearing on the country station that makes me think of James and Lily.

To me (who got married at 27, almost 28), James and Lily got married -incredibly- young. I think they did have a happy marriage (both Sirius and Remus seem to think so- they don't exactly evade the subject of James and Lily as a couple anyway), but I can see where they would have had difficulties just adjusting to each other and being married, like any young couple. This song definitely makes me think of them, although there's more Muggle references than I'd like Wink (And I don't think they got married on graduation night. But still.)

Apologies to any Phil Vassar fans if I butcher the words.

"A Real Love" -Phil Vassar

I was eighteen, making minimum wage

With a letterman jacket and a Cheverolet

Thought I was cool

Yeah, I ruled the school.

You were cum laude with the strawberry lips

You had the whole world dangling at your fingertips

Your senior year

And I was your daddy's worst fear.

We ran off on graduation night

Thought a couple of left-hand rings would make everything all right

With a little bit of love, little bit of learn

Little bit of watching a few more candles burn

And finding out what life was

With a little bit of fuss, little bit of fight

Little bit of kiss and making up all night

And one day waking up

In a real love

I was twenty-two working double overtime

I was spending dollars and making dimes

We were overdrawn

Barely hanging on

Then one night you came to me

With tears in your eyes and an EPT

And said "Guess what?

Yeah, baby, ready or not."

I just smiled though I was scared to death

How am I gonna have a kid when I'm still a kid myself?

With a little bit of love, little bit of learn

Little bit of watching a few more candles burn

And finding out what life was

With a little bit of fuss, little bit of fight

Little bit of kiss and making up all night

And one day waking up

In a real love

I know, I know. I have developed quite the hold on this topic, and I apologize that I am not waiting long enough for everyone to catch up to me (or just have a waning interest in it). Nevertheless, I shall continue, with even yet another character to add to the list. That, and *shrugs* you will probably see me use some songs that will probably date me just a bit *sighs*. Oh well. By all means, all of you should also continue on and find songs for characters that you like or that you feel bring out a certain character’s situation or personality well.

Now, this character is one that I have liked all along. In fact, to a large degree, there is not much not to like about this person. I would also add this person has been an active part of the story for the very first chapter of the very first book. However, this person can be seen to be one of the most enigmatic characters of the series thus far, in that, many times has a certain Socratic look to him. Namely, the character in question seems to possess or obtain knowledge that appears only this person could fully receive or understand – and yet dismisses a lot of it like a little child with his hands in the air saying, “I don’t know”. This person may be able to see the entire series through, or at least, this person knows how it will (and perhaps, must) end. This person has shown himself to be the great father figure for many who would have otherwise been left behind, such as Rubeus Hagrid, Remus Lupin, and even Harry himself. He asks all to try to see clearly – to see what has happened to the fullest extent, and what may be the consequences of the events that transpired in a circumstance – even when he seems to be a little bit of a prankster himself (i.e. surely you remember the Christmas present this person gave to Professor Snape in PoA, don’t you?) Above all of this, he strikes the quintessential benevolent yet powerful figure that, one can argue, is this era’s Merlyn or Gandalf. Of course, it also helps that many in the magical world consider him to one of the greatest wizards of all time. To no one’s surprise, the slightly mysterious figure whom I now speak of is none other than . . . .

Headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore

The first song I have for Dumbledore comes from a part in the series that some say makes him appear old and less than the “all knowing, all powerful” one we seem to assert with him, “The Lost Prophecy” in OoTP. In that discussion with Harry, I also picture Dumbledore thinking alone in the Headmaster’s Office of all the events that has occurred up to that point. And this song typifies these thoughts and views that Dumbledore has, to me. And let me enumerate some points in the song that might pertain to various HP characters. The “broken man” is Sirius. The “dealer” is Voldemort. The “mother’s son” is Neville. And lastly, the “boy playing with his toys” is Harry. I believe he knows more than anyone that harsh times are ahead, but, after those times, perhaps Harry will fulfill his role as being the one to bring peace back to the land. See if this makes sense as representative of some of Dumbledore’s thoughts . . .

Martin Page – Shape the Invisible

Just another day

Love seems so far away

There's no sign of life

In Eden's garden

Just another day

Liberty's coming out to play

On a Belfast street

Concrete stained

Blood and rain

I'm ashamed

There's a broken man

Praying for a wounded land

Oh why can't we shape the invisible

For faith that's blind

The voice of reason cries

Oh why can't we shape the invisible

Just another day

Brotherhood won't show his face

In the neighborhood

Drive by shots

Time stops

Doors are locked

Behind my door

Fear is keeping score

Oh why can't we shape the invisible

And the dealer won't rest

'Til he sells a child Death

Oh why can't we shape the invisible

Just another day

Walking in the steps of Cain

In the desert sun

Lightning strikes

Chemical lights

Burn my eyes

A mother's son

Is now a soldier marching on

He's been told to shape the invisible

Under poisoned skies

The children wonder why

Our fathers can't shape the invisible

Somewhere a small boy

Is playing with his toys

Someday his innocence

will Shape The Invisible

Speaking of innocence, I think there is an important but harsh lesson that Dumbledore is trying to teach Harry, particularly in light of Harry’s overflowing anger throughout OoTP. Not only does Dumbledore want to have a clear head on his shoulders, particularly devoid of too much emotion, but he wants Harry to remember who he is and from where he came. Harry was born and was kept alive through love, even through Dumbledore’s admitted love of Harry (perhaps, not just to fulfill the prophecy, but also, akin to an older relative’s love, care, and respect to a younger relative). And it is this same gift that will most likely be the undoing of the Dark Lord. Right now, Harry’s mind and development is completely unhinged and unfocused. It needs an inspiration to start over again, to give it a “clean slate”. To me, as bad as this might sound, it reminds me (though, considering the mascot of the Gryffindors is indeed, the Lion, maybe it is not as far-fetched as it sounds) of “The Lion King” where Simba comes to adulthood and he sees the shadow of his father again. His father tells him something like, “Remember who you are. You are the one true King. Remember who you are. Remember . . . remember.” I think that Dumbledore is trying to say, without actually stating it, something similar to Harry. Yes, bad things happen to good people. Bad things sometimes happen for no reason at all. But one cannot allow one’s spirit be so encased in dismay or sorrow to make a person frozen in their lives forever, and thus, cannot do anything more with their lives or for that matter, grow. To rephrase Dumbledore’s point, I would put it as so: Harry, to feel this way means you are still human. You are still growing and still alive. You still know what it means to love. Unlike Lord Voldemort, who has lost all of his humanity and has never known what love is.” And so, with a patient smile, I give this song to Dumbledore, one that many of you may have heard at one time or another.

Enigma – Return to Innocence

Ami Chant

Love - Devotion

Feeling - Emotion

Love - Devotion

Feeling - Emotion

Don't be afraid to be weak

Don't be too proud to be strong

Just look into your heart my friend

That will be the return to yourself

The return to innocence

If you want, then start to laugh

If you must, then start to cry

Be yourself don't hide

Just believe in destiny

Don't care what people say

Just follow your own way

Don't give up and use the chance

To return to innocence

That's not the beginning of the end

That's the return to yourself

The return to innocence

Now to a song that is quite an old one. This is one that is very special to me on a personal note as well. It is one that I think is most appropriate for when Dumbledore and Harry really meet for the first time, in front of the Mirror of Erised (particularly when Harry thinks he is all alone and he is looking at his former relatives – James, Lily, and the rest of the Potter and Evans families). I think it is also a nod to what Dumbledore has been doing around Harry all along – watching him closely, making sure he is okay – that is his paramount concern. Dumbledore does not just want Harry to train and be as excelled in magic as he can be so that he has a fighting chance against Voldemort, but also, as the beginning of SS states, Dumbledore wanted Harry to have a life that was not tainted by the magical life, to know what it is to be “normal”. And, as we see by the end of OoTP, the covers have been thrown off and the battle for the entire wizarding world begins, no more “disguises” and no more running away from tragedies that have already occurred. So, in trying to convey these thoughts, I leave all of you with a memory from Old Moody’s own childhood . . .

Moody, this is a song that I listen to on a daily basis, I know it back and forwards but never once I thought of it as good words for Harry. Indeed it would be good if Dumbledore made him see and understand what the song says.

Now...My song is in spanish. I'm sorry, but I listened to it today and just couldn't help relating it to Harry, Hermione, and Ron. This is in my eyes, a part of the way Harry lives his friendship with two of the people that have marked his life so deeply:

Mecano - Hijo de la luna

Sol, querido hermano Sol

Estatico Señor

bombilla amarilla de calor.

Luna, hermana la menor

lucero del amor,

espia de las noches de pasion.

Hermano Sol, Hermana Luna

que nada nunca me separe de los dos

Hermano Sol, Hermana Luna

que nada nunca me separe de los dos.

Hermano sol

Que cuece tu intererior?

Que trae tanta explosión?

Pareces tan confuso como yo

Luna, blanca refleccion. Helado corazón.

Sereno que me guardas del ladrón.

Hermano Sol, Hermana Luna

que nada nunca me separe de los dos

Hermano Sol, Hermana Luna

que nada nunca me separe de los dos

Hermano Sol, Hermana Luna

que nada nunca me separe de los dos

Hermano Sol, Hermana Luna

que nada nunca me separe de los dos.

Sol, hermano Sol

Hermano Sol...

And my poor translation:

Sun, dear brother Sun

Static lord

yellow bulb of heat.

Moon, my young sister

Star of love

Spy of passionate nights.

Brother Sun, Sister Moon

may nothing keep me away from you both.

Brother Sun, Sister Moon

may nothing keep me away from you both.

Brother Sun

What burns your interior?

What brings so much explosion?

You seem as confused as me.

Moon, white reflection. Cold Heart

Peace that keeps me from the thief.

Brother Sun, Sister Moon

may nothing keep me away from you both.

Brother Sun, Sister Moon

may nothing keep me away from you both.

Brother Sun, Sister Moon

may nothing keep me away from you both.

Brother Sun, Sister Moon

may nothing keep me away from you both.

Sun, Brother Sun

Brother Sun.

The translation kind of loses meaning, because it's written slightly metaphorically, but still, I think that Ron and Hermione are in fact the moon and sun in his life, their friendship is one of the few things Harry knows certain in his life, and cherishes it as such.

Great choices for Dumbledore, Moody, and I liked the way you drew on his role as a father figure for so many. And Mari's song for Harry, Ron and Hermione is beautiful. They truly mean so much to him.

I thought I should try and be a bit more profound, and look at a character in a particular moment, rather than general songs about characters as I've been posting so far. And I thought where better to start than Ginny Weasley, my namesake, herself? And while I really love the girlpower Ginny we see in OotP, and there are myriad girlpower songs to fit that view of her, I think we - like Harry - tend to forget the darkness in Ginny's past and the bearing that it has on her character. I'll attempt to keep my shipping tendencies out of this, but I do believe that Harry's saving Ginny's life in the Chamber is one of the pivotal moments in the series, for many reasons. As JK confirmed, if Ginny had died, the story would have taken a very different direction.

So I started trying to see that moment from Ginny's point of view. There she is lying on the cold stone floor of the Chamber of Secrets, her journey to hell averted moments before its destination, knowing that she has risked destroying herself, her family, her world, and the boy she loves in her naive, childish way with all her heart. He has saved her, yet he must despise her for the purposes for which she has been used, for serving as an instrument in the Dark Lord's hand.

Quote::
Her bemused eyes travelled from the huge form of the dead Basilisk, over Harry in his blood-soaked robes, then to the diary in his hand. She drew a great, shuddering gasp and then tears began to pour down her face (CoS 237)
In this moment she realises the extent of what she has done, of what the dark force possessing her had accomplished through her, and that it is only because of Harry that its inevitable destruction was prevented.

So this is my song for Ginny unconsciously anticipating death, and Harry's salvation:

Whisper - Evanescence

Catch me as I fall

Say you're here and it's all over now

Speaking to the atmosphere

No one's here and I fall into myself

This truth drives me

Into madness

I know I can stop the pain

If I will it all away

[Chorus:]

Don't turn away

(Don't give in to the pain)

Don't try to hide

(Though they're screaming your name)

Don't close your eyes

(God knows what lies behind them)

Don't turn out the light

(Never sleep never die)

I'm frightened by what I see

But somehow I know

That there's much more to come

Immobilized by my fear

And soon to be

Blinded by tears

I can stop the pain

If I will it all away

[Chorus]

Fallen angels at my feet

Whispered voices at my ear

Death before my eyes

Lying next to me I fear

She beckons me

Shall I give in

Upon my end shall I begin

Forsaking all I've fallen for

I rise to meet my end

And this is Ginny realising that Harry of all people knows what she's done:

Losing my Religion - REM

Life is bigger

It's bigger than you

And you are not me

The lengths that I will go to

The distance in your eyes

Oh no I've said too much

I set it up

That's me in the corner

That's me in the spotlight

Losing my religion

Trying to keep up with you

And I don't know if I can do it

Oh no I've said too much

I haven't said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing

I thought that I heard you sing

I think I thought I saw you try

Every whisper

Of every waking hour I'm

Choosing my confessions

Trying to keep an eye on you

Like a hurt lost and blinded fool

Oh no I've said too much

I set it up

Consider this

The hint of the century

Consider this

The slip that brought me

To my knees failed

What if all these fantasies

Come flailing around

Now I've said too much

I thought that I heard you laughing

I thought that I heard you sing

I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream

That was just a dream

A shroud of darkness covers the graveyard as bitter rain clouds take over the sky. I look up at the moon and see how it slowly surrenders to the shadows. Thunder tingles in the night as a cold, soft rain starts to fall.

‘It rains because you’re sad, baby!’ a voice from the past whispers in my memory.

Yes, it is Old Moody with more songs for more characters. I hope all of you do not tire of me and my suggestions, or at least not badly. I am only trying to illustrate a few key parts of a character’s personality, and in doing so, attempting to put song to word to, as one might say, “put some meat on the bone”. Please forgive me if I belabor these posts too long.

However, let us endeavor to bring light to yet another intriguing character in Rowling’s wizarding world. This time around, I present a character that has a certain duality to him. On the one hand, we believe to know and understand a lot about him (particularly from a certain point of view); but on the other hand, we really know very little. He may be a maligned character in some people’s view, but trying to discover “the real” him, or at least, gauging him on some actions that he did take, we may be inclined to “redeem” him in our eyes. He was, at times, aggressive and foolhardy, and at other times, very loyal and even noble. Sounds a bit like Sirius, no? Well, let me just say you are at least on the right track. In a previous post, I spoke of Dumbledore being a father figure for Harry at Hogwarts. Now, I ask, what might we think about Harry’s real father . . . .

James Potter

The “twin” of Sirius was said to be quite the troublemaker, and, perhaps in that one Pensieve scene, a bit of a bully, too. He was the head, the ringleader of the Marauders, as we fondly looked back at him in the conversation between the professors in the Three Broomsticks in PoA. He was also the bane of Snape’s life throughout their years in Hogwarts, whether on the Quidditch pitch, in the classroom, or springing pranks, traps, and curses upon him. One could argue that he, not Percy Weasley, should have the inglorious title of “Bighead Boy”. And with all of these “bad boy” or even “obnoxious prick” like moments, there is another side to James which some people might be inclined to forget.

James was also a very caring and sympathetic person, at least around the people that he could call his friend. He happily brought Sirius to his family’s house to live with for a while when Sirius walked out on his parents for the last time. He also protected Remus as well, when the “two brothers” found out his dark secret. As Remus himself would relate, instead of walking away from him, James and Sirius actually became closer to him, helped him through some trouble spots, and even became Animagi to accompany him and to protect him. Even though James knew Peter’s deficiencies in magic, Peter also was shielded by James, away from others at Hogwarts. There was also one other person who caught James’ favor, though he also got on this person’s nerve more than a handful of times. One person, with James, that arguably changed the destiny of the wizarding world. Of course, I speak about the lady who would later become his wife, Lily. And, the relationship between the two is what I shall focus on for songs to represent them, but most particularly, James.

This first song is quite an old one (that probably dates me again, but nevertheless), but quite a memorable one. I imagine this song is how each time James “makes a mess”, he still comes back to Lily and grudgingly asks for forgiveness. I could also see what might have drawn James to Lily in the first place (and the same thing that we will eventually get an elucidation in Books 6 and 7), her green eyes. In addition, I imagine that James would probably be very playfully with Lily, particularly when he became an Animagus. I picture him approach Lily slowly from behind a tree, looking at her patiently, and then chasing after her. She runs off, gets backed into a boulder sticking up from the ground, trees around her, and is cautiously eyeing the stag. He hesitates for a moment, and then transforms back, hugging and laughing with Lily – though Lily pointing at him excitingly saying, “You!”

Crosby, Stills, & Nash – Suite: Judy Blue Eyes

It's getting to the point

Where I'm no fun anymore

I am sorry

Sometimes it hurts so badly

I must cry out loud

I am lonely

I am yours, you are mine

You are what you are

And you make it hard-

Remember what we've said and done and felt

about each other

Oh babe, have mercy

Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now

I am not dreaming.

I am yours, you are mine

You are what you are

And you make it hard-

Tearing yourself away from me now

You are free and I am crying

This does not mean I don't love you

I do, that's forever, yes and for always

I am yours, you are mine

You are what you are

And you make it hard-

Something inside is telling me that

I've got your secret. Are you still listening?

Fear is the lock, and laughter the key to your heart

And I love you.

I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are

And you make it hard-

And you make it hard-

Friday evening, Sunday in the afternoon

What have you got to lose?

Tuesday mornin', please be gone I'm tired of you.

What have you got to lose?

Can I tell it like it is? Help me I'm sufferin'

Listen to me baby-Help me I'm dyin'

It's my heart that's a sufferin', it's a dyin'

That's what I have to lose

I've got an answer

I'm going to fly away

What have I got to lose?

Will you come see me

Thursdays and Saturdays?

What have you got to lose?

Chestnut brown canary

Ruby throated sparrow

Sing a song don't be long

Thrill me to the marrow

Voices of the angels ring around the moonlight

Asking me, said she so free

How can you catch the sparrow?

Lacy, lilting lyrics

Losing love lamenting

Change my life, make it right

Be my lady.

Doo doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo doo doo etc...

The second song takes this basic idea between James and Lily another step. I am reminded of Sirius’ comments noticing that around seventh year, James was able to mellow a little and lose a bit of the “Bighead Boy” attitude. I think it was a time in which James had to “get over himself” if he wanted to date and eventually marry the woman of his dreams and parchment drawings. Perhaps, as we take in an idea of Lily from the PoA movie, we suppose that not only was Lily very understanding and compassionate toward others (Remus in particular, but perhaps, based on the same Pensieve scene, also with Snape), but she was also very patient. That is, Lily being patient enough with herself with James, knowing that eventually he would “grow up”, at least a little. I would contend that James finally saw how wonderful Lily was and how long he had been missing out on a great relationship for life.

As a corollary to this idea of James “growing up” and deflating his ego just a little to allow the relationship to start, I offer an old little parable of a Zen master and a Western professor. The story goes something like this: A Western professor traveled a very long distance to find this old and wise Zen master. He wanted to ask him all different questions of the world, of the practice of Zen, and of his philosophy. The master happily invited the professor in and wanted him to have some tea. The professor accepted and as he was trying to ask the master the questions on his mind, the master began to pour the hot tea. The master filled the professor’s cup and kept pouring the tea. It fell on the saucer, on the spoon, and started to flow all across the table. The master, though, kept pouring the tea into the cup until it overflowed enough that the hot tea fell into the professor’s lap. Finally after the professor tried indirectly to mention the cup was overflowing, he howls out in pain at the master. The professor asks incredulously why the master did not stop pouring the hot tea. The master replies something like, “Because the tea and the cup are just like you. You are so full of your own ideas and thoughts there is no room left in you to put anything new (Zen). Once you have space in yourself, you may come back.” It is similar to James relating to Lily. He has been so full of himself for long enough that he needed to let go, to puncture his ego for Lily and her love to enter his life. The song that typifies this type of conversion is an older one from Survivor, and it reminds me of James giving himself a knock on the head and realizing what he has been missing all along.

Survivor – The Search is Over

How can I convince you what you see is real

Who am I to blame you for doubting what you feel

I was always reachin', you were just a girl I knew

I took for granted the friend I have in you

I was living for a dream, loving for a moment

Taking on the world, that was just my style

Now I look into your eyes

I can see forever, the search is over

You were with me all the while

Can we last forever, will we fall apart

At times it's so confusing, these questions of the heart

You followed me through changes and patiently you'd wait

Till I came to my senses through some miracle of fate

I was living for a dream, loving for a moment

Taking on the world, that was just my style

Now I look into your eyes

I can see forever, the search is over

You were with me all the while

Now the miles stretch out behind me

Loves that I have lost

Broken hearts lie victims of the game

Then good luck it finally struck

Like lightning from the blue

Every highway leading me back to you

Now at last I hold you, now all is said and done

The search has come full circle

Our destinies are one

So if you ever loved me

Show me that you give a damn

You'll know for certain

The man I really am

I was living for a dream, loving for a moment

Taking on the world, that was just my style

Then I touched your hand, I could hear you whisper

The search is over, love was right before my eyes

The last song I provide for James comes at the most harrowing moment of his life, his final confrontation with Lord Voldemort. The moment is encapsulated in what Harry hears from the Boggart Dementor in the Patronus lessons with Remus. I can picture Voldemort having a sinister grin on his face, malevolently laughing, and slowly entering Godric’s Hollow. I see James waving his hands furiously repeating several times to Lily, “Don’t worry about me. Take Harry and go!” Voldemort glides forward, like a Dementor, and takes out his wand, but does not point it in James’ direction just yet. James, in a hurried state, finally gets Lily into a room. He slams the door behind her and turns around in a mix of terror and anger, one hand and bend of an arm pressing backward on the door and the other hand and arm raised, wand in hand at Voldemort. James now knows the battle for his life has begun, for he knows he might not get out of the Hollow with his life, but he might be able to buy enough time for Lily and Harry to escape before Voldemort catches up to them. As that door slams, imagine this song beginning and see James fulfilling his final vow to Lily – “till death do us part”.

I came across this song the other day. The singer is patiently waiting for a loved one who's been parted from him. Something about it made me think that either the singer or the loved one could be dead ("we all smile at beginnings, try to laugh through the rest"), and that started me thinking about spirits watching over loved ones from beyond the grave. The patience suits them well--after all, they can afford to wait forever to be reunited. And if the living have a hard time letting go of the dead, it could just as easily work the other way.

All that said, this song is Lily and James' song for Harry after their deaths. (I couldn't find a printed copy of these lyrics, so this is what I think I heard.)

Sunshine and Cinnamon--Kid Lightning

Sweet little angel

My love and my pride

I would wait here forever

For one night by your side

I would stand by your garden

Through the rain and the rest

I would wait here forever

Til my bones turned to dust

We all smile at beginnings

Try to laugh through the rest

We whisper our secrets under sweet candy breath

You smell like sunshine and cinnamon

Sundays in June

I miss you as soon as you walk out of the room

I try hard--there is nothing I can do

I can go to foreign places

Rearrange the faces

But the only one I ever see is you

And whither we journey

My love and my pride

I would wait here forever

For one night by your side

<span style="color:green;font-family:verdana;]If everything's coming your way, then you're in the wrong lane.

<span style="color:black;font-family:helvetica;font-size:xx-small;]Yet all experience is an arch wherethrough

Gleams that untraveled world, whose margin fades

For ever and for ever when I move.

--Alfred Lord Tennyson

Oh Adara, please make sure you watch out with the emoticons. A little goes a long way!

Anyway, I saw this song posted on another Harry Potter site, so it's not my original idea, but I agree with the person who posted it that this is a good song for Voldemort. Or actually Tom Riddle. I haven't decided yet...

One By One by Foo Fighters

All my life I've been searching for something

Something never comes never leads to nothing

Nothing satisfies but I'm getting close

Closer to the prize at the end of the rope

All night long I dream of the day

When it comes around and it's taken away

Leaves me with the feeling that I feel the most

Feel it come to life when I see your ghost

Calm down don't you resist

You've such a delicate wrist

And if I give it a twist

Something to hold when I lose my grip

Will I find something in there

To give me just what I need

Another reason to bleed

One by one, hidden up my sleeve

Don't let it go to waste

I love it but I hate the taste

Weight keep pinning me down

Will I find a believer

Another one who believes

Another one to deceive

Over and over, down on my knees

If I get any closer

And if you open up wide

And if you let me inside

On and on, I've got nothing to hide

Then I'm done, done, on to the next one

I was about to put Blackbird as my song for Sirius, but I decided to actually check to see if anyone else had mentioned that. Lo and behold it was the second post!

Jane, Blackbirdis my favorite Beatles song, and yes I think it applies directly to Sirius. Probably better than anyother song I can think of. I couldn't agree with you more.<!--EZCODE EMOTICON START Very Happy --><img src=http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif ALT=":D]<!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

Id like to throw this out, this is Neville's theme, he like harry was orphaned, but unlike harry, who received the fame and fortune, Neville has been alone, yet he stays the course in the face of adversity.

"Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" - GREEN DAY

I walk a lonely road

The only one that I have ever known

Don't know where it goes

But it's home to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street

On the Boulevard of broken dreams

Where the city sleeps

And I'm the only one and I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk a...

My shadows the only one that walks beside me

My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me

Till then I walk alone

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ahhh-Ah

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah

I'm walking down the line

That divides me somewhere in my mind

On the border line of the edge

And where I walk alone

Read between the lines

What's f*cked up and everythings all right

Check my vital signs to know I'm still alive

And I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk alone

I walk a...

My shadows the only one that walks beside me

My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me

Till then I walk alone

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ahhh-Ah

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah I walk alone, I walk a...

I walk this empty street

On the Boulevard of broken dreams

Where the city sleeps

And I'm the only one and I walk a..

My shadows the only one that walks beside me

My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me

Till then I walk alone!

For the potter i gotta say this is very appropriate

"Fly From The Inside" - SHINEDOWN

Is the weight of the world on my shoulders

Is the weight of the world on my shoulders

On my shoulders

All alone I pierce the chain

And on and on the sting remains

And dieing eyes consume me now

The voice inside screams out loud

I am focused on what I am after

The key to the next open chapter

Cause I found a way to steal the sun from the sky

Long live that day that I decided to fly from the inside

Every day a new deception

Pick your scene and take direction

And on and on I search to connect

But I don't wear a mask and I have no regrets

I am focused on what I am after

The key to the next open chapter

I am focused on what I am after

The key to the next open chapter

Cause I found a way to steal the sun from the sky

Long live that day that I decided to fly from the inside

I can't escape the pain

I can't control the rage

Sometimes I think that I'm gonna go insane

I'm not against what's right

I'm not for what's wrong

I'm just making my way and I'm gone

Here's the weight of the world on my shoulders

Cause I found a way to steal the sun from the sky

Long live that day that I decided to fly from the inside

that I decided to fly from the inside

that I decided to fly from the inside

I think that this lil gem is over looked for Sirius, quite fitting all things considered."Vindicated" - DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL

Hope dangles on a string

Like slow spinning redemption

Winding in, winding out

The shine of it has caught my eye

And roped me in

So mesmerizing, so hypnotizing

I am captivated I am

Vindicated

I am selfish

I am wrong

I am right

I swear I'm right

I swear I knew it all along

And I am flawed

But I am cleaning up so well

I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself

So clear

Like the diamond in your ring

Cut to mirror your intentions

Oversized and overwhelmed

The shine of which has caught my eye

And rendered me so isolated, so motivated

I am certain now that I am

Vindicated

I am selfish

I am wrong

I am right

I swear I'm right

I swear I knew it all along

And I am flawed

But I am cleaning up so well

I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself

So turn

Up the corners of your lips

Part them and feel my finger tips

Trace the moment, fall forever

Defense is paper thin

Just one touch and I'd be in

Too deep now to ever swim against the current

So let me slip away

So let me slip away

So let me slip away

So let me slip against the current

So let me slip away

So let me slip away

So let me slip away

So let me slip away

Vindicated

I am selfish

I am wrong

I am right

I swear I'm right

I swear I knew it all along

And I am flawed

But I am cleaning up so well

I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself

my hope

It dangles on a string

Like slow spinning redemption...

Let me now go back to this topic that I like very much, Character Theme Songs. The character that I shall write about today is a quite easy and obvious character to see, though, to define him and understand him fully may not be so easy. The reason why this is easy enough is that we have followed him on every step of his journey. At the same time, one might say it is most appropriate that I am speaking toward this one character on Thanksgiving. Why do I say that? Without this character, there would be no J. K. Rowling, world famous author, there would eventually be no Sirius Black and, most certainly, there would be no Immeritus. He must bear the weight of the entire series, and, as we saw in OoTP, the bearing of that weight finally caught up to him. The weight in question, of course, is this character is the only one who can vanquish the Dark Lord. The Dark Lord has never been defied by anyone to the degree this character has done – for this character is one who defied Death himself. He is . . . The Boy That Lived

Harry James Potter

One thing that comes to mind with Harry since OoTP is the amount of questions he still has about his journey. Dumbledore has not quite quelled all of his questions just yet. Harry also has a slightly rhetorical question that has been building for a long time: “When will it all end?” His answer of sorts is spoken twice in OoTP -- once when he was possessed by Voldemort after the battle between Voldemort and Dumbledore in the Department of Mysteries, and once during the following conversation (“The Lost Prophecy”) between Dumbledore and Harry. He wants this journey to end. He wants it gone. He does not want the burden of being the savior of the magical world anymore.

Another event that occurred in OoTP was the coming together and the subsequent coming apart of the relationship between Harry and Cho Chang. I think Harry has realized that neither one of them is ready for a relationship. He needs to move on to someone else if he is going to have a relationship again, for right now it is simply “not going to work.” And so, on both of these themes, I recall this old song, that again, probably dates me just a little. I think this song best brings out Harry’s questioning nature about everything going wrong in his life.

The Moody Blues – Question

Why do we never get an answer

When we're knocking at the door?

With a thousand million questions

About hate and death and war.

It's where we stop and look around us

There is nothing that we need.

In a world of persecution

That is burning in it's greed.

Why do we never get an answer

When we're knocking at the door?

Because the truth is hard to swallow

That's what the wall of love is for.

It's not the way that you say it

When you do those things to me.

It's more the way that you mean it

When you tell me what will be.

And when you stop and think about it

You won't believe it's true.

That all the love you've been giving

Has all been meant for you.

I'm looking for someone to change my life.

I'm looking for a miracle in my life.

And if you could see what it's done to me

To lose the love I knew

Could safely lead me through.

Between the silence of the mountains

And the crashing of the sea

There lies a land I once lived in

And she's waiting there for me.

But in the grey of the morning

My mind becomes confused

Between the dead and the sleeping

And the road that I must choose.

I'm looking for someone to change my life.

I'm looking for a miracle in my life.

And if you could see what it's done to me

To lose the love I knew

Could safely lead me to

The land that I once knew.

To learn as we grow old

The secrets of our souls.

It's not the way that you say it

When you do those things to me.

It's more the way you really mean it

When you tell me what will be.

Why do we never get an answer

When we're knocking at the door?

With a thousand million questions

About hate and death and war.

It's where we stop and look around us

There is nothing that we need.

In a world of persecution

That is burning in it's greed.

Why do we never get an answer

When we're knocking at the door?

In the last few books, Harry has started to gain a picture of what his father did and what his father was like. Part of the problem with this picture, though, is that Harry is very much like James – both in looks and in behavior – and thus, is too close to have a good assessment of him. He arguably even has a new generation of Marauders that he leads that, from the first book onward, included Ron, Hermione, and Neville. He also realizes just how protective James was of his family and his friends, such as the Patronus lessons in PoA, or in the Priori with Voldemort scene with in GoF. However, from the Pensieve scene in OoTP, Harry’s faith in his father was drastically shaken, even after both Sirius and Remus tried to calm down Harry about what he saw. I think if Harry can come to an understanding about his father and remember just how much his father loved him, then he will get through all the rest of the pain to take on the Dark Lord. I also believe the next book, the Half-Blood Prince, will show how much pain and sadness Harry will have to endure, and it may just be the love of his father and his mother that will be his strength. Besides, we realize from Dumbledore that love itself may be the “device”, the “weapon” that leads to the complete undoing of Voldemort. And so, I offer this song, of a love between father and son, which endures past all strife and hardship. Or, when we almost least expect it when he “never thought you’d come”, we see that . . . “Prongs rode again last night.”

Elton John – The Last Song

Yesterday you came to lift me up

As light as straw and brittle as a bird

Today I weigh less than a shadow on the wall

Just one more whisper of a voice unheard

Tomorrow leave the windows open

As fear grows please hold me in your arms

Won't you help me if you can to shake this anger

I need your gentle hands to keep me calm

`Cause I never thought I'd lose

I only thought I'd win

I never dreamed I'd feel

This fire beneath my skin

I can't believe you love me

I never thought you'd come

I guess I misjudged love

Between a father and his son

Things we never said come together

The hidden truth no longer haunting me

Tonight we touched on the things that were never spoken

That kind of understanding sets me free

`Cause I never thought I'd lose

I only thought I'd win

I never dreamed I'd feel

This fire beneath my skin

I can't believe you love me

I never thought you'd come

I guess I misjudged love

Between a father and his son

One last song for Harry is a very special song for me. It is a song that is always performed a cappella and I think it typifies this long journey that Harry began. He may need to rely on his father, but since James and Sirius are both gone, it will be a hard journey to continue. Dumbledore seems so distant from him now, he has a feeling that Hagrid keeps getting in over his head with exotic but dangerous creatures to the point of death, and even his friends do not seem to be on the same page as him and with him. More so than anything the Dudleys could do to him, Harry now feels all alone. It is much worse to have loved and lost – to be brought into a world that was his parents’ lives, to find all of these wonderful people and caring friends, and to have this world and these people taken away from him – than to have never discovered this world and never have these loving feelings. Even though people are trying to support Harry and trying to remind him they are still there, he has begun to back away as he has realized his horrific destiny, “to be a murderer or victim”. Because of this, Harry now has to walk “the road less traveled”, in which, at the end of all this, no one else can join him on the final steps. And the last lessons which he has to learn on this journey will be the hardest, but he has to learn them if he wants a chance at survival and at a new life.

Right off I'd like to say that I am new and beg forgiveness if somehow I screw up this post as it is my first!! Anyway, I really liked this idea of songs and I thought of this one by Sting right away (it is from one of the Lethal Weapon movies - I forget which). It reminds me of course of Sirius, and that last line - I don't remember it- but when I looked up the lyrics, there it was, so I left it.

It's probably me - Sting

If the night turned cold

And the stars looked down

And you hug yourself

On the cold cold ground

You wake the morning

In a stranger's coat

No-one would you see

You ask yourself, 'Who'd watch for me?'

My only friend, who could it be?

It's hard to say it

I hate to say it

But it's probably me

When your belly's empty

And the hunger's so real

And you're too proud to beg

And too dumb to steal

You search the city

For your only friend

No-one would you see

You ask yourself, 'Who could it be?'

A solitary voice to speak out and set me free

I hate to say it

I hate to say it

But it's probably me

You're not the easiest person I ever got to know

And it's hard for us both to let our feelings show

Some would say

I should let you go your way

You'll only make me cry

If there's one guy, just one guy

Who'd lay down his life for you and die

It's hard to say it

I hate to say it

But it's probably me

When the world's gone crazy, and it makes no sense

And there's only one voice that comes to your defence

And the jury's out

And your eyes search the room

And one friendly face is all you need to see

If there's one guy, just one guy

Who'd lay down his life for you and die

It's hard to say it

I hate to say it

But it's probably me

I hate to say it

I hate to say

But it's probably me

I hate to say it

I hate to say

But it's probably me

I hate to say it

I hate to say

But it's probably me

Dog-star...
