Everyone knows he's a Black Lab and Chow Chow mix!
That's what my dog Shiloh is, who I've been calling Padfoot for years.

I think since he is a pureblood he would probably be some sort of purebred looking dog, but definitely with an element of scruffyness to him as he rejected his background. JK said that an animagus form is a reflection of your personality (I remember her mentioning she hoped she would like to think of herself as an otter), so you don't really get to pick what animal to become. An animagus isn't exactly an actual dog anyway so he wouldn't really be any specific breed, he just might resemble one. I imagine him as more of a belgian sheepdog because of the shaggyness (I used to think newfoundland but newfoundlands look more like they would be football players in human form and Sirius is usually a little on the scrawny side.) I love the kelpies but their ears are so prominent it seems as if Sirius would have to have really big ears in human form for that to make sense. So like a belgian sheepdog with pale gray eyes. Although he's supposed to be a big dog, he also was able to squeeze through the bars of Azkaban as a dog, so I don't think that size is really an issue. As long as it sort of looked like him in a way it would work for me.

I've always pictured Snuffles as the result of a Great Dane and a Newfie gettin' together.
Maybe a black akita?

I have a Newfoundland Labrador mix. He's only two at the moment, but he has a bit of growing left to do, but he makes me think of Sirius everytime I look at him He's got a Newfoundland's feet & head, but a Lab's body. If he had more of a Newfie's fur, he'd be a perfect Sirius after Azkaban. He had to be pretty thin to get through the food slot!!

The way Sirius was depicted in PoA was pretty good in my opinion When I had read it, I had imagined Padfoot as being bigger and bulkier, possibly through the depictions of the grim in the book I guess?
As a Mutt, it suits Sirius as he was pretty original, especially for a Black - not only to go against the family, but take an active stance against the Death Eaters, who were supported by the Black family. It's possible to imagine him as a purebreed as he is a Black, but I think that that would be against Sirius' 'beliefs' as it would make him too much like the rest of his family.
Wow, so much deeper than I meant this post to be

Whoa. I was looking up dog breeds during my lunch break for the most "Sirius-looking" breed... couldn't really find anything exactly fitting, so I came to browse through the Sirius fanlistings for ideas...
Anywhoo - I was thinking Irish Wolfhound (with a bit of Newfie scruffiness):
This is a big gigantic dog that I can imagine slipping through cage bars. And stalking through the night fortelling death.

...S'a BIG dawgie.
Irish Wolfhound: "He was used to hunt wolves and elk and to accompany Irish nobles to war." Are you thinkin' what I'm thinkin'?
(Sorry, not sure how to pare down the size of that pic. Here's another, not the best angle, but if you're interested in the black version: www.greatershelbykc.or.../Con20.jpg )
I want a dog.

*long ears flapping*
Awwww, what gorgeous dogs!
I'd also say, Sirius would be some kind of mutt, but I always imagined that there was a bit of Alsatian in Padfoot. They look very sharp, can be dangerous, are super smart and are extremely loyal.

I agree with what many of you have been saying, that Sirius would have been a Newfie mix. My personal opinion would be that he was a Newfie/Lab or Newfie/Retriever mix, plus a bunch of other really big shaggy dogs in there somewhere.
However, it is possible that he still could have been a pure Newfoundland. You gotta take into consideration that he'd just spent nearly 12 or 13 years in Azkaban, where I doubt he's well looked after and fed by those dear dementors, and therefore he is extremely thin and outrageously unkept and shaggy. That goes for both his human and animal forms. So any dog, no matter how huge or fluffy, if underfed, would probably be able to slip through the Azkaban bars.
Also, I believe that the state the human is in affects the appearance of their animal form, like how when Peter lost weight due to fear of Sirius, Scabbers appeared to be sickly and thin. So Sirius, who has a long, untidy, shaggy black hairdo and is malnourished (are you really going to get proper nutrition while living in hiding in a forest?!) in human form will have those attributes reflected in his dog form. So for all we know, before Azkaban Sirius could have been one heck of a poofy chubby pooch....

I think of Sirius as a Rottweiler. I don't have any very good reason for that, it's just that when I imagine him as a dog, what I see in my mind's eye is a Rottweiler. They are big and black, that's all I can say.

Before I had always imagined him as a mutt, but then I came across the Black Russian Terrier. And I have to agree with whyamitheconvict that he would be a purebred, because as much as he hate his family, they were part of his identity.

I think of him as a mutt, its more of Siri's sort of dog in a way. It can be a mix of anything, is usually good with children, funny, athletic, all-around good dog. OH WAIT, i just saw that JKR says the same thing! COOL! But, I think he had some Belgium shepard in him, it sounds a lot like his animagus form!
